A: What is your first memory of personal style?

A.H: Remember finding this coat that I used to have when I. I guess it was kind of a fancy coat when I was like five. No, not five. I must have been like eight. And I found it. It was big for me then. And I found it when I was like 12 and I wore it and it looked cool.

A: What did you want to become when you grow up?

A.H: I grew up in London. As a kid, I wanted to work in finance. I dreamed of becoming a banker. I realized while finishing university that I didn't actually like academia because after wanting to be a banker, I realised I wasn't actually very good at math. No, I was good at maths. I wasn't good at economics. So that dream failed. And then I, while studying for my final exams in my final year, I realised I spent half of my time drawing. And then I kind of, you know, gave in and was like, I guess I want to be an artist after all.

A: Do you still live between Londo and New York?

A.H: No. The last 10 years, I've spent basically just in New York. And now I'm wanting to kind of return home in a way and, like, actually split my time between the two. When I was younger, I think I just felt a bit, like, constricted by London. And I was very. You know, I finished university and I was like, I'm moving to New York. I got lucky. I got a visa for my illustration work, and I never looked back.

A: What’s your attitude towards fashion nowadays?

A.H: I do feel very connected to fashion. I guess when I wear clothes, I don't always, you know, kind of when I go out now, people are like, you're wearing real clothes. And I do wear real clothes. And actually, now I've started to wear my clothes outside as well.

A: How did your Gucci collaboration happen?

A.H: Davide found me on Instagram and bought one of my illustrations for Alessandro for his birthday. You know, kind of a very like, I mailed it off. I was living in New York already. I was actually living on the Upper east side, staying at a friend's apartment and went to FedEx, put it in the thing. It was received. Davide was super happy. It was really cute. They worked together at Gucci. Now six months later I get an NDA from Gucci, sign it and then they're like, we want to do this limited edition T shirt collaboration. And that happened.

A: What’s your attitude towards trends?

A.H: No. Yeah. I don't follow trends. I think I follow my strong sense of personal style.

A: What does New York represent for you?

A.H: To me, New York represents. It was really geographical independence. Coming to New York was really kind of like the independence that I needed. It wasn't just being independent, you know, being 21 or whatever it was. It was, you know, kind of like living seven hours away from my family was.

A: What are your next plans?

I guess life wise would be spending more time in London and creatively painting again will be fun. I just got a studio in Gowanus. There's no windows, so we'll see what that's like. But I think in the winter it'll be fine.
