FOREVER
BEGINNING.
Christian Stemmler is a German stylist and photographer who published one of the most intimate documentations of the Berlin clubbing scene in the 90s. We met Christian in Milan at our studio where he was shot by Kristijan Vojinovic, Antonioli’s creative director.
The Styling Project was Kristijan’s idea to gather stylists who share Antonioli’s aesthetic and let them style themselves instead of styling others, putting them in the spotlight, chatting about fashion and not only.
A: What is your focus right now?
C.M: My focus is all over the place. And this is a gift I give to myself. After being a stylist for 23 years, I'm also allowing myself to explore new things. I'm modeling right now, so it's my new thing. I just had to arrive in my late 40s to become a model.
A: Did your love for fashion start with photography?
C.M: Interesting question, I think it did, you know, because when I picked up the camera at 17, it was the people around me that were so interesting because of their style, you know, not just the clothes, also the hair and makeup and all that, so I was obsessed looking at them, you know, and this is why I also made the effort to get the camera, to take the pictures, I mean, imagine back then it was so inconvenient, you had to have the film, you had to put it on,you had to carry it around, you know, nothing was digital, you really had to go get the prints, not to lose the negatives and all of that, so you had to make an effort, but I wanted it because I was obsessed with the beauty and I still am.
A: What drives you as a creative?
C.M: But it's the same thing as I said in the beginning. I would still say it's the people around me, you know, it's the people I meet, people I encounter, and I'm also very communicative, you know, also on the street, in the public transport, on airports, I really look at people. So it's, it would still be my biggest inspiration.
A: Why did you wait so long to publish your book ANFANG/BEGINNING: BERLIN 1994-99?
C.M: I needed to distance myself from it, you know, and the idea to really turn these pictures into a book was just born after I left Berlin. So they were lying in the box for, like, almost 30 years. But just when I had moved to Milan, I started thinking about that time also, like, Berlin changed, and so I started scanning the archive, so it just had to wait a bit.
A: What comes to your mind when I say fashion?
C.M: Style.
A: Sexy?
C.M: Body.
A:Light?
C.M: Night.
A:Party?
C.M: Is over.
