We met Desiree before her set at Volt, where she shared her perspective on entering the music industry and the advice she would give to emerging talents. We also spoke about the earliest memories of music and the inspiration shaping her journey.
A: What advice would you give to those who want to get into the music industry?
D: Always stay true to yourself, be unique, don’t try to copy others because there can only be one of you.
A: How do you see music and fashion as connected?
D: Well, both are mediums of expression, so they are vehicles that we use to express our creativity.
A: Where do you find inspiration for your creative work?
D: I mostly find my inspiration from my life experiences. So whether it’s from me growing up in a township in South Africa in Johannesburg, or being a raver in a club and listening to other DJs and their work yeah that inspires me a lot.
A: What is your first memory of music?
D: My first memory of music is definitely when I was a kid and I would attend a lot of weddings or sometimes even funerals and in African cultures people always come out and sing to celebrate or even to mourn
