After graduating in law in 1966, Yamamoto started a fashion design course at the famous Bunkafukuso Gakui college in Tokyo. He began his career as an anonymous designer around 1970. In 1977, he presented his first Y’s label collection, which still exists today as a secondary line. Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo, designed their first haute couture women's ready-to-wear collection in 1981 introducing the concept of deconstructed fashion. Their revolutionary aesthetic shocked the world with clothes that looked unfinished, tattered and with loose and flowing silhouettes, which defined his revolutionary work, and became the go-to look of the 1980's urban aesthetic. In 1984 Yohji launched his first menswear collection.
